Nicotine is a drug like caffeine. Like caffeine, it has its addictive properties and its own set of side effects. However, the more dangerous part of smoking is related to the burning of a cigarette.
There are more than 4,000 chemicals generally found in tobacco smoke. More than 50 of these are known to cause cancer. Most of the chemicals including carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide are formed when tobacco burns. As a cigarette is smoked, the amount of tar inhaled into the lungs increases, and the last puff contains more than twice as much tar as the first puff.
